Various parts of Castle Morpeth are prone to occasional flooding. The rivers Pont and Wansbeck and their tributaries, which affect the settlements of Ponteland and Wansbeck in particular, are the main contributors to this. Other more minor watercourses, and poorly drained land in various settlements can result in flooding affecting smaller numbers of properties and you are always advised to check with the Environment Agency to establish the known areas.
As the local planning authority, the Council is supplied with information on Flood Risk Areas from the Environment Agency, which informs planning policy and decisions on planning applications. Current policies are contained in the Castle Morpeth District Local Plan, and will be reviewed through the Local Development Framework.
Although flooding information can never be totally accurate because of changing climatic and drainage conditions, for a general guide to the most significant susceptible areas, please access the Environment Agency website.
The Council also has a flood action plan accessible through this link.
