The Public Sewers are generally found in the roadway and are the responsibility of the appropriate Water Authority who will deal with any problems free of charge.
The pipe from a property that joins into the public sewer is called a Private Drain and is the property owner's responsibility.
This pipe may be linked to others from neighbouring properties by another pipe called a Private Sewer. This pipe collects sewage from several properties and then joins into the Public Sewer. The responsibility for any maintenance to a Private Sewer is shared between the owners of the properties it serves, irrespective of where the defect occurs.
The Council's Environment Health Section will, if necessary, serve a Legal Notice on all responsible persons to remedy any blockages or defects causing a risk to Public Health.
Please note that the Council does not employ any Drainage Workers. Property owners must engage a private firm to do work, should it prove beyond their own capabilities.
