Community transport is a term covering a wide range of transport solutions usually developed to cover a specifically identified transport need, typically run by the voluntary sector for the local community on a 'not for profit' basis.
Included are the following types of services:
- Voluntary car schemes
- Section 19 - permit minibuses
- Minibus brokerage
- Integrated options
Age and disability can stop people driving and using public transport. Community transport users are generally unable to access other mainstream public transport services either because they have physical, sensory or learning disabilities, or have no public transport service available to them because of geographic isolation - i.e. those in remote rural areas.
The client group of community transport users who would otherwise experience 'social exclusion' includes people with disabilities who cannot use conventional transport services, those in rural areas for whom no public transport service exists, including young and elderly people, or those people on low incomes.
