Linton, a former pithead village with a population of 420, is located 7 miles to the northeast of Morpeth on a newly constructed road which borders the village to the west. Click here for map.

The village facilities include a first school, church, post office, corner shops, an institute, allotment gardens and a recreation ground. A regular bus service operates to Morpeth, Ashington and Bedlington.

History of Linton Village Hall

In 1932 the miners' welfare hall was opened; it was supported by the miners from their wages. In 1968 Linton colliery closed and many of the miners were transferred to other local collieries

Linton SchoolIn 1986 Castle Morpeth Council were asked to be custodian of the miners' welfare hall so that this vital community asset could by retained. A management committee was set up which consisted of local residents and councillors. It was decided to rename the building 'Linton Village Hall' to reflect the community involvement.

The front of the hall has a pleasant view across the bowling green and the natural Northumberland countryside.

Rare orchids grow within the grounds of the village hall, which come to show in the summer months. The hall has barbecue facilities and picnic tables and regularly holds events in the summer

Within the hall there are a number of rooms which can be hired for special events and functions. One of the rooms is designed as a traditional bar.

There is a dining room, which can accommodate 40 people and can be used for all sorts of function from meeting room to wedding reception and buffet supper. There is a fully equipped kitchen, which was upgraded in 2002, that may be hired for private parties by special arrangement.

The real gem of this building is the beautiful wooden floored hall with a dance area, that can hold over 150 people. Here they hold various community activities such as sequence dancing, archery, and discos, as well as hiring out to the general public for weddings and parties

Some of the activities that go on in the village hall are:

  • Whist club
  • Coffee mornings
  • Darts team
  • Live music events
  • Archery
  • Sequence dancing
  • Bowling
  • Spiritual church
  • Badminton
  • Line dancing
  • Barn dances
  • Summer barbecues

You can hire the hall by contacting Janet Robson at the Post Office in Linton.
