West Thirston village has a population of 195 and is located approximately 12 miles north of Morpeth, on the south bank of the River Coquet, adjacent to the larger village of Felton, which is on the north bank and in Alnwick District. It is an attractive roadside village situated in the north of the Borough on the route of the former A1 and the B6345 Amble road. Click here for map.
The village, built on the steeply sloping wooded bank of the River Coquet, is of special architectural and historic interest, with many of the buildings being listed. The older core of the village is situated adjacent to the medieval bridge crossing the river, with the remainder of the village being situated above and directly south of this group of buildings on the B6345 road. Although many of the buildings are of recent origin, there are several older buildings which are important to the character of West Thirston. The village itself was designated as a Conservation Area in 1987.
The village facilities include a first school, shops, post office, public houses, a village hall and playing fields (some of these facilities are in the neighbouring settlement of Felton). A regular bus service operates to both Morpeth and Alnwick.
